日本を訪れた外国人は、どんな風景に日本を感じるのでしょうか？
二人が撮った写真は偶然にも横浜の「大桟橋ターミナル」と「マリンタワー」でした。

Yokohama's new passenger terminal, designed by "F.O.Architects", opened this summer in a busy harbor surrounded by skyscrapers, suspension bridges, and ships arriving from around the world. The three levels of the terminal are interwoven into a single, continuous space that includes parking, a cafe and shops, an assembly hall for travelers, an open-air theater, jogging paths, and parks. In the midst of Japan's busiest port, the wave-like slopes of the terminal's public areas invite an inspiring walk, it's grassy patches a picnic. Expert carpentry recalls the deck of a ship, but it is the fluid forms of this new urban park, and the cruise liners docking alongside it, that remind visitors that travel on the sea, for tourism or tade, never stops.

この夏、私は日本に行き新しくオープンした「F.O.Architects」デザインによる横浜大桟橋ターミナルを訪れた。３階建てのターミナルは波のようになだらかにひとつにつながっていて、そこにはカフェやショップ、旅客用大ホール、シアター、ジョギングロード、公園などがある。この日本で最も忙しい波形ターミナルは、人々に素敵な散歩道やピクニックを提供している。大工の高度技術の結晶であるデッキウォークは一見、船のデッキを思わせるが、これはビル街の都市公園の新しいフォームなのである。そして、それにドッキングされた波止場は、すべてのものが止まる事なく流れている。

Japanese culture is a hybrid and has made the new style, moreover. The concern about the hair style and dress is a high standard, too. In me, Japanese people seemed to have made the original identity. Visiting Japan gave me the energy I needed to go back to work in Switzerland and Europe. The stimulus I got was great, the people in Japan are hard working, polite, and smart.

日本の文化はハイブリッドで、そのうえ新しいスタイルを生んでいる。服やヘアスタイルなどへの関心もハイスタンダードで、日本人は独特のアイデンティティをつくり出しているように思う。僕の場合、日本に行ったときに彼らが驚くほどよく働き、礼儀正しく、スマートなのを見て刺激を受け、スイスやヨーロッパに帰って仕事をするうえでとても役に立った。
